Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from psychotherapy?

Participation in therapy can result in a number of benefits to you, including improving interpersonal relationships and resolution of the specific concerns that led you to seek therapy. Working toward these benefits, however, requires effort on your part including honesty and openness in order to change your thoughts, feelings and/or behavior. Change will sometimes be swift and easy, and sometimes it is slow and even frustrating. Most people feel that the effort is well worth it and the rewards of becoming your authentic Self are great. During the course of psychotherapy we are likely to draw on various psychological approaches according, in part, to the problem that is being treated and on our assessment of what will best benefit you. These approaches may include Cognitive-Behavioral, Psychodynamic, Family Systems, EMDR, Hypnosis, Psycho-Educational and Transpersonal/Existential modalities.

How long will therapy last?

Therapy can last a few months or several years. But in general we engage in long term depth therapy. This, of course, depends on the presenting issue and a number of other factors. There is no obligation to stay in therapy beyond the point that you find it helpful.

How often are the sessions and how long do they last?

Sessions are generally 50 minutes although arrangements can be made for longer sessions when necessary. Couples sessions last 60 minutes, with the possibility of double sessions when appropriate. We prefer to see individuals on a weekly basis as we feel this best facilitates growth and healing and allows deeper work. Sometimes couples find it preferable to come in bi-weekly especially after the initial few months.

How much does therapy cost?

We have taken care to set our fees in a range that is customary for psychotherapists in the San Francisco area and that is commensurate with our years of experience. We accept payment by cash, check, and credit card. Please call us to discuss our current fees.

Do you accept insurance?

We are not on any insurance panels but if you have a PPO or a fee for service insurance plan, you will most likely get reimbursement for our services. At your request, we will present you with an insurance statement at the end of each month for you to submit to your insurance company.

What populations do you serve?

We accept clients age 15 and up. We see couples, families, and individuals. We will see children under the age of 15 if they come in for family therapy with other family members. We welcome both heterosexual and same sex couples.
